How Bright Horizons Helped My Child Understand Mathematical and Scientific Concepts

Meet Dina, mother to a 3-year-old boy and member of our fantastic Parent Panel*; a diverse community of Bright Horizons parents sharing their experiences of raising happy, thriving and confident children. In this blog, Dina shares how Bright Horizons supported her son’s understanding of maths and science at a young age.

As a parent, it's amazing to see my child's curiosity and understanding of the world grow through learning. My 3-year-old's time at Bright Horizons has been instrumental in developing his mathematical and early scientific skills. The nursery's engaging activities and nurturing environment have made learning fun and accessible.

Mathematical concepts

At Bright Horizons, my child has been introduced to various mathematical concepts, such as counting, sorting, and patterning. The teachers use play-based activities, like block building and shape sorting, to help children understand numbers and shapes. These activities have helped my child develop problem-solving skills and think critically.

One activity that stood out was the "Number Hunt" game, where children search for numbers in their environment. This game has helped my child recognise and identify numbers, laying the foundation for future math skills.

Scientific concepts

The nursery staff have also encouraged my child's curiosity about the natural world through science-based activities. They've explored the five senses, observed plants and animals, and conducted simple experiments. These activities have helped my child develop a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world.

One activity that my child loved was the "Sink or Float" experiment, where they predicted whether objects would sink or float in water. This activity taught them about buoyancy and cause-and-effect relationships.

Supporting learning at home

To reinforce my child's learning at home, we engage in activities like counting blocks, sorting toys, and exploring nature. We also read books together that incorporate mathematical and scientific concepts, making learning fun and interactive.

Bright Horizons has provided my child with a strong foundation in mathematical and scientific concepts. The nursery's play-based approach to learning has made math and science fun and accessible. I'm excited to see my child's continued growth and development in these areas.
